PURPOSE OF AFRICAN MUSIC

 





African music is a tradition mainly played at gatherings at special occasions. The traditional music of Africa, given the vastness of the continent, is historically ancient, rich and diverse, with different regions and nations of Africa having many distinct musical traditions. African music, the musical sounds and practices of all indigenous peoples of Africa, including the Berber in the Sahara and the San (Bushmen) and Khoikhoin (Hottentot) in Southern Africa. The music of European settler communities and that of Arab North Africa are not included in the present discussion. The music of Africa is very important when it comes to religion. The music of Africa is used to transmit messages and ideas, and to record and recount historical events or pass down stories from generation to generation.
